Creative academy BOA Stage and Screen Production team up with Coronation Street star this Christmas

BOA Stage and Screen Production Academy are teaming up with The Old Rep Theatre again this year ahead of the BOA Group production The Wizard of Oz in Birmingham this festive season from Tuesday 26 November – Tuesday 31 December 2024.

Students will be working alongside professional director, actress and Coronation Street star Lorna Laidlaw to bring the exciting story to stage this Christmas. Lorna’s performance credits include: Aggie in Coronation Street, Mrs Tembe in Doctors, Getting It Straight and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Birmingham Rep.

Lorna said: “I am thrilled to be bringing to the stage this production of The Wizard of Oz. A production full of fun and laughter for the whole family. The yellow brick road is waiting for you!”.

Students will be working with a professional creative team including Janice Connolly, known for stand-up character Mrs Barbara Nice and her role as Holy Mary in Phoenix Nights, who serves as the comedy dramaturg. Connolly’s expertise in humour will help ensure that the production resonates with audiences of all ages, adding a delightful Brummie touch to the timeless narrative.

The musical direction is in the capable hands of Gladstone Wilson. Returning creatives include CiCi Howells as Choreographer, Clive Meldrum as sound designer and Leanne Fitchett as costume designer. Ebrahim Nazier’s joins the team as set designer creating an immersive backdrop that will transport the audience to the Land of Oz.

Students will have a hand in constructing the set, making costumes, helping with wardrobe and make-up artistry, as well as having a hands-on experience in Technical Theatre Production, working as lighting technicians, sound engineers and stage crew.

We also have some students participating in the production in our ensemble from BOA Creative, Digital and Performing Arts Academy. Another one of our leading regional academies at the forefront of vocational training for the Arts and Creative Industries.

This collaboration not only enhances or students educational journey but it also provides invaluable insights that they carry forward into their future careers in the arts.”

Kate Tague, CEO of the BOA Group also said: “For many of our students from BOA Stage and Screen Production Academy and BOA Creative, Digital and Performing Arts Academy, this will be their first experience of working alongside a professional cast and creative team. I’m so proud of them for taking up the challenge and seeing all the hard work produced in our academies transfer onto a professional stage.”

“We can’t wait for you to join us to see the incredible work the students have put into this amazing production with elements such as hair and make-up, lighting, sound, costume design, and amazing lifelike props – that will really impress you.”
